A new set of letters revealing details of life during the gold rush have been acquired by the Nevada Historical Society.

Written by mining brothers Hosea and Ethan Allen Grosch, the letters are considered among the most important documents from the gold rush, reports Sign On San Diego.

Dating back to the years between 1849 and 1857, the letters were written from Nevada and California mining camps and contain "rich detail" about life in the gold mines.

A discovery made by the brothers in 1857 led to the unearthing of the Comstock Lode, which since yielded nine million ounces of gold, the report notes.

However, the miners died without realising the significance of their discovery.

"They alerted other miners that there was more than gold in the area," Nevada state archivist Guy Rocha told the publication.

Destination 360 notes that gold mines in Nevada represent about 64 per cent of US gold production, United States Geological Survey data shows.
