Gold coin collection worth millions is unveiled

Wednesday, 11th June 2008 (474 views)

A precious metal company has gathered together one of the world's most expensive gold coin sets.

The collection, assembled by Lear Capital for an anonymous American businessman, includes four of the "finest known" coins.

The set is valued at more than $6.5 million (£3.3 million).

Among the coins is the 1880 Four Dollar Stella, which is one of only eight known in the world and is valued at around $3 million.

The Stella was an international trade coin prototype made for the US congress. The coin was never introduced into general circulation, according to rare coin dealer Blanchard and Company.

The set also includes the Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair coin from 1879, and a Flowing Hair coin from 1880.

President of Lear Capital, Kevin DeMeritt, said: "It is a gorgeous and impressive set that contains so much American history."

Earlier this month, an example of an early US gold $10 coin from 1795 sold for $402,500 in auction at Stacks, reported Numismaster.
