Treasurehunters look for goldMonday, 9th June 2008 (392 views) Treasure hunters and professional salvage crews are heading to the coast of Florida this month, in the search for hidden gold, it has been reported. From May to August, in the spirit of famous treasure hunter Mel Fisher, teams dive into the ocean in search of Revolutionary War-era shipwrecks and their hidden booties, according to the Associated Press. While it is believed that Florida has the most treasure-filled Spanish shipwrecks because of its position on the Gulf Stream, explorations take place up the entire East Coast, at the Carolinas, Virginia and New England. In 1622, an entire fleet of Spanish ships was sunk in hurricanes at Key West, then again in 1715 at Fort Pierce and in 1733 near Key Largo, and salvage hunters believe there are hundreds of millions of dollars of gold sitting at the bottom of the sea. It was two of those galleons sunk near Key West in 1622 that were discovered by Fisher in 1985. The treasure hunter found more than 40 tons of silver and gold on the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and Santa Margarita.
