AngloGold highlights good safety record

Friday, 30th May 2008 (389 views)

Gold producer AngloGold Ashanti has highlighted its record on safety by showing journalists around its Mponeng gold mine near Carletonville in South Africa.

Writing about his visit in Mining Weekly, Martin Creamer says Mponeng general manager Rundle Rademann talked through the health and safety measures employed on the site.

He told the journalists that the mine had beaten its best safety record so far by achieving 108 days without an accident and that it hoped to extend this even further.

Mr Creamer explained that while AngloGold has all the usual safety procedures in place for events such as power failures, it also has strategies that minimise the risk of injury from unforeseen events such as seismic activity.

"One of these strategies is that everyone entering Mponeng must be aware of the current seismic rating and ensure that the working day's actions are planned accordingly," he wrote.

AngloGold Ashanti says it is committed to providing a working environment that is "conducive" to health and safety.

The company produced 5.5 million ounces of gold in 2007 from mining operations in South Africa, Australia, Brazil and other countries throughout the world.
