FDR gold compact under the hammer

Tuesday, 27th May 2008 (333 views)

A gold compact that former US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave to his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, is among the items associated with the statesman set to be auctioned off next month.

The Associated Press reports that the 18-carat gold compact, which is engraved with a message from FDR to his wife, is expected to fetch between $4,000 (£2,000) and $6,000.

A Tiffany wristwatch worn by the president at the Yalta Conference is also to go under the hammer and is expected to sell for between $4,000 and $6,000.

These items and a host of other memorabilia linked to the president and his wife are part of the private collection of Massachusetts' Joseph and Deborah Plaud.

"This has been my life's passion and I just hope whoever becomes the owners of these special pieces treasures them and preserves them," Mr Plaud told the news provider.

Among FDR's most famous actions as president were the New Deal policies, conceived to lift the US out of the Great Depression.

Eleanor Roosevelt founded the UN Association of the United States in support of the formation of the UN, going on to chair the committee that drafted and approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
