Members of a community in northern Ontario have expressed dissatisfaction with the government's decision not to fund a new centre for mining development.

The Sudbury Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) would have boosted economic activity and employment in the area, states the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Charlie Angus, MP for Timmins-James Bay, said that the move undermined the potential of the centre to lead innovation in the mining industry.

"This centre is focused on technological innovation to make our mines safer, more profitable and environmentally responsible," he said.

Meanwhile, FedNor critic with the NDP Tony Martin said that the CEMI decision reflected the gap between government attitudes and community need.

The Ontario Mining Association has this week noted on its website that its members donate some $100 million (£50 million) annually to environmentally-friendly initiatives.

Companies that mine for gold and other commodities in the province are represented by the association.
