Gold artefacts on show in Bulgaria

Monday, 28th April 2008 (276 views)

A set of gold treasure dating back to the Thracian period is set to be displayed at Bulgaria's Plovdiv Fair between May 12th and 15th, it has been revealed.

The Sofia News Agency reports that the Panagyurishte gold treasure - comprising secen wine rhytons, an amphora and a food dish - are to be put on display for festival goers next month.

Having already been displayed in European destinations such as Paris, Switzerland and Brussels, as well as Japan, the treasure comes to Bulgaria under heavy security measures.

Visitors will only be able to view the nine artefacts behind armoured windows.

Following the festival, the items are to be transported to the Spanish city of Saragossa, where they will represent Bulgaria at a world expo taking place there.

While the historical boundaries of Thrace have varied, the term applies to a region encompassing what is now known as southern Bulgaria, north-eastern Greece and European Turkey.
