The relationship between Elizabethtown, Kentucky and the gold that was once mined there is the subject of a new publication.

According to the News-Enterprise, local author Robert Prather has released a book weaving together the Hardin County area with buried treasure in literature and gold mines.

The Strange Case of Jonathan Swift and the Real Long John Silver poses the notion that the treasure in the Robert Louis Stevenson classic, Treasure Island, is in fact based on a mine in Kentucky.

Indeed, the region's historic affinity with precious metals is evident in place names such as Gold City Towing and Gold Nugget Army Surplus, notes the publication.

During the 1890s, many residents looked for gold in the area, with news reports detailing a local sheriff's deputy who purchased 40 acres of land after learning it was rich in gold ore.

"The region actually seemed to be taking on the feel of a Wild West mining area - at least going by an article next to one of the gold fever stories," the article asserts.

Anyone interested in the history of Elizabethtown could pay a visit to the Hardin County History Museum, housing artefacts relating to the region.
