Ashton Police station is calling for anyone with information about a recent gold theft to come forward.

More than £5,000 in gold jewellery and clothing were burgled from a house in Ashton-Under-Lyne on Monday morning, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Indian 22 carat gold pieces were taken from the dwelling after the alarm box was smashed, while brand new saris were also stolen.

Anyone who witnessed any unusual activity in the area is being asked to come forward.

Police are also looking for cooperation from anybody offered items matching the description of those thieved this week.

Paula Ricci, Police Constable at Ashton Police Station, told the news provider: "The family are clearly very upset that their home and their privacy was invaded and that valuable personal belongings were stolen.

"I would appeal to anyone who is offered these items to contact us as soon as possible."

A recent poll by CreditExpert found that 20 per cent of UK consumers associate jewellery with wealth.
