Kirkland Lake Gold has won two safety awards for its exploration and development work in 2007, the company has announced.

It received the Angus D Campbell award, which is presented annually to the company working in north-east Ontario with the lowest accident rate. The award, which was introduced in 1950, was shared with Rio Tinto's Luzenak Division.

Kirkland Lake also scooped a new trophy, the Robert E Dye trophy. This is a new award given to the company with the lowest rate of injuries requiring medical aid.

Accident rates in both categories for Kirkland Lake's Ontario operations were zero in 2007.

Brain Pascoe, Kirkland Lake Gold's safety superintendent, said the awards reflected the success of the company's Internal Responsibility System, which emphasises that "all workers are responsible for their safety and the safety of others".

"Both awards are a credit to all 270 company and contractor employees working both underground and surface," he added.

Kirkland Lake Gold's properties in Ontario include the Timmins area, which is estimated to contain around 65 million ounces of gold and the 40 million-ounce Kirkland Lake property.
