"08ers" head to the hills of California

Monday, 31st March 2008 (585 views)

A new generation of gold seekers is heading to the California hills to look for the precious metal, a report observes.

While the 2008 gold rush "is not quite the stampede of 1849", the Independent claims that these modern-day prospectors are kitted out with first-rate technology that would put their ancestors to shame.

According to the publication: "Where the 49ers were rugged and wild, the 08ers generally turn up on weekends with metal detectors in minivans."

The rising gold price is said to be fuelling traffic to northern California and other parts of the western US and Canada.

Membership of the Gold Prospectors' Association of America has tripled, while special events for gold panners are being organised by the Mojave Prospectors' Association.

As well as the Sierra Nevada mountains, gold seekers are flocking to other panning hotbeds such as north-west Oregon's Granite, the report notes.

In related news, historian Adam Collings is scheduled to give a talk on the California gold rush to the Big Bear Valley Historical Society on April 9th, according to the Daily Bulletin.
