A gold coin exhibition is to be held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the first minted coin in the US.

The exhibition holds links to other famous days in the city's history including the first gold rush in the US that took place in Charlotte in 1800 and the opening of the first Museum in North Carolina, the Mint Museum itself, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The museum was rebuilt from the ground up to be an exact facsimile when the old mint building was moved to its current site.

The exhibition will include half eagles ($5), quarter eagles ($2.50) and one dollar ($1) coins, all minted in Charlotte and imprinted with the "C" mark.

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina; as of 2006 it was the fifth-fastest growing city in America. It currently has a population of nearly 1.6 million people and is the largest metropolitan area between Atlanta and Washington DC.
