Kirkland Lake Gold has been chosen to share the top safety award for its region with Rio Tinto Minerals Luzenac, it has emerged.

A the annual awards banquet of Porcupine Northeastern Ontario Mines Safety Group held in Timmins earlier this week, the companies were presented with the Angus D Campbell Award, Northern News reports.

This accolade is granted to the firm with the lowest lost time accident frequency in the past year.

Ken Cook, an executive member of the safety group, said: "Both mines had zero lost time injuries including the contractors at their operations."

He added that both operations recorded a zero - the lowest possible figure - meaning that Kirkland Lake Gold will hold the award until August before transferring it to Luzenac from August onwards.

Kirkland Lake Gold owns and operates five major gold properties at Kirkland Lake in Ontario, namely the Macassa, Kirkland Minerals, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore and Wright Hargreaves mines.
