A talk about the California gold rush is to be given by historian Adam Collings this April, it has been announced.

The Daily Bulletin reports that the author is to bring his talk, Jan. 24, 1848: The day that rocked the planet, to the Big Bear Valley Historical Society on April 9th 2008.

Author of historical chronicle California - West of the West, Mr Collings is to offer the organisation an overview of the significance of the gold rush for the state and the wider world.

January 24th 1848 was the date that gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, sparking a rush that brought some 300,000 people to the state to search for riches in the land.

These early pioneers who panned for gold in the rivers and streams are often referred to as 49ers.

Mr Collings's talk is to take place in the Community Building of the Whispering Pines Mobile Home Estates.
