Sets of commemorative coins brought out to coincide with the upcoming Beijing Olympics are recording brisk sales around the world, reports say.

Numismatic News states that the set, which was issued by the China Mint, contains 18 coins in all, six of which are gold containing one troy ounce.

According to the site, they are intended to reflect the theme of the Games - "One World, One Dream".

Production of the sets is limited to 60,000 worldwide, 3,000 of which have been earmarked specifically for the United States market.

Govmint.com, which is selling the coins in the States, reported brisk sales due to high demand generated by the limited number of available coins. Another retailer, Panda America, is only selling the coins as a complete set priced at $8,888 (£4,487).

In China, all of the sets available sold in 2006, which Numismatic News says reflects both the popularity of the Games and renewed interest in gold coins following the repeal of a law banning their ownership.

Some 10,708 athletes will compete in 302 events in Beijing when the Olympic Games open on August 8th.
