Callas gold at Berlin displayWednesday, 19th March 2008 (2448 views) A gold wreath is among the items currently laid out for visitors at the Konzerthaus centre in Berlin. The centre is home to the Maria Callas & Swarovski - Jewels on Stage exhibition, featuring custom made necklaces, diadems and other items worn by the famed singer, reports the Times. According to the publication, the exhibition is inspired by Callas' demand in 1947 - when she was virtually unknown to the public - that her jewellery be exclusively crafted by Swarovski's Ennio Marangoni. Included in the display is a teardrop pendant worn at the height of the icon's fame in 1960, as well as the costume pieces she sported at the beginning of her distinguished career. Born in New York, Maria Callas found fame as an operatic soprano during World War Two and the post-war years. The diva - who died of a heart attack at the age of 53 - has been described as "the bible of opera" by Leonard Bernstein.
