Gold canvas for £4m at Sotheby'sWednesday, 27th February 2008 (1115 views) A gold, egg-shaped canvas by Lucio Fontana is being offered at auction house Sotheby's for £4 million this week. The Globe and Mail reports that the piece, entitled Le Fine di Dio, is among a number of high-profile sales that could contribute to a record for the house. According to the report, Sotheby's is forecasting revenue of at least £20.6 million for February 28th, with Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon pieces accompanying the gold canvas at auction. Cheyenne Westphal, Sotheby's European chairman of contemporary art, told the publication that the market has adopted a "new selectivity". "It's geared toward quality. The very best still fetches extremely high prices, but the rest has to be priced accordingly," he said. Born in Argentina, Lucio Fontana is renowned as the father of spatialism, an art concept inspired by abstract expressionism that attempts to capture movement and time by transcending easel and paint.
