A special gold medal awarded to a Lincoln City football player in 1921 has been sold at auction.

The gold Wilson Hospital Cup Medal was given to Oscar Charles Brentnall to commemorate a charity match organised by the club to raise money for Lincoln County Hospital, the Lincolnshire Echo reports.

A private buyer bought the medal and an accompanying information booklet for £300. The medal is engraved with an image of Lincoln Cathedral and the city's coat of arms. Brentnall's name appears on the back of the medal.

"Brentnall's medal represents quite an unusual piece of the club's history and I cannot recall a similar medal up for auction," commented Donald Nannestad, co-author of Lincoln City FC The Official History.

Trevor Vennett-Smith, owner of sports auctioneer Vennett-Smith, recently told the Telegraph that the advent of the internet has helped to push up the value of sports memorabilia such as medals by up to 400 per cent in the last five years.
