The government of Papua New Guinea has welcomed the environmentally-friendly actions of one gold mining company, it has emerged.

Prime minister of the country Michael Somare has encouraged state-owned firm Petromin to comply with environmental standards when operating the central province's Tolukuma Gold Mine.

According to the National, the prime minister was heartened in this respect by recent comments from the company's chairman highlighting its commitment to reviewing and improving Petromin's current waste management processes.

"Petromin would be expected to work with the department of environment and conservation and other state agencies to attend to any aspect of the report to ensure the safety of our people in these communities," said Mr Somare.

Central governor Alphonse Moroi added that the state owned firm has an obligation to "the people" to address environmental issues.

Gold mining contributes significantly to the country's economy, according to the US Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs' website.
