Anglo American reaches rights agreement with DMEWednesday, 20th February 2008 (1063 views) Gold miner Anglo American has reached an agreement with the South African department of minerals and energy (DME) regarding mining rights conversions.The company has announced that discussions about how Anglo American can support black economic empowerment and meet the requirements of the mining charter have developed significantly over the last few weeks. Cynthia Carroll, chief executive officer of Anglo American, comments that she is pleased with the progress being made towards black economic empowerment. "This is a landmark achievement for the group and for the many black empowered businesses with which we are partnered," she adds. Sandile Nogxina, director-general of the DME, added that she welcomed the "strong spirit of cooperation" that characterised the discussions. The company's work in Africa includes a strategy to minimise HIV among its employees, with community projects widening awareness about Aids, encouraging condom use and involving traditional healers in the drive to eradicate the disease.
