Residents of Beijing are purchasing gold items to celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Mouse, a new report has observed.

According to the China Internet Information Centre, gold is featuring highly on the list of mouse-adorned objects being bought by people enjoying the holiday festivities.

Gold bars and coins bearing images of mice are particularly popular, it was noted.

Li Xiang, a manager with the Caibai Gold and Jewellery Market, told the publication: "Gold products featuring zodiac animals have become more popular among customers."

The Caibai Gold and Jewellery Market was the site of gold sales weighing three tonnes last year, compared to less than one tonne in 2001, he added.

"The lovely mice add to the festive atmosphere," said one customer as he purchased rodent-shaped gold for his partner.

The Year of the Pig is officially over when Chinese New Year falls on February 7th, 2008.
