The first gold pour has been completed at the Amesmessa mine in Algeria, the company that runs the facility has said.

GMA Resources says a delegation including Dr Chakib Khelil, Algeria's minister of energy and mines, visited Amesmessa for the pouring, which marked the mine's official opening.

Two bars were produced, weighing in at over 24 kilograms for the pair. The bars were 87 per cent gold and 12 per cent silver, producing 672 ounces of gold.

The company reports that the pour proves ore at the mine leaches well.

GMA chief executive Douglas Perkins said the pouring was the next step towards full commercial production at Amesmessa.

The main Amesmessa deposit was discovered in 1978. The mine is located approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of Tirek in southern Algeria.
