Mary Rose gold treasures 'to be displayed at new museum'Monday, 28th January 2008 (1133 views) Gold artefacts are among the treasures from historic vessel the Mary Rose to be exhibited in a new museum, it has emerged.A new display space at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is to show items recovered from the Mary Rose and another famous ship, the Cutty Sark. The museum is to be funded by a £31 million grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with £10 million of the grant given to restore the fire-ravaged Cutty Sark and £21 million to be directed towards the building of a new exhibition space for the objects. Items recovered from the Mary Rose include gold coins, a bronze cannon, quill pens still stained with ink and shoes, reports the Times. "The Mary Rose is one of the most important objects in English History. It's up there with the Domesday Book, Magna Carta and Hampton Court," said historian David Starkey. A fire broke out on the Cutty Sark last year, with restoration work due to start next month following the grant.
