Sacramento park renamed to recognise gold historyFriday, 25th January 2008 (1101 views) A park in Sacramento, California, is to be renamed in recognition of its gold rush history.Goethe Park, Sacramento County Regional Park, is to revert to its traditional title of Leidesdorff Ranch. Described by the San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Centre as "a rare opportunity to preserve, reconstruct, and interpret the gold rush era", the move is said to precede the park's occupation of a central place in the state's school education. Leidesdorff was the name of the president of the first California School Board - he donated the land and opened the state's first public school. The park was recently inducted into the prestigious California agricultural Heritage Club, which is aimed at preserving the natural beauty of northern California. EyewitnesstoHistory.com reports that the discovery of gold northeast of present-day Sacramento in January 1848 preceded the discovery said to have sparked the state's gold rush in Sutter's Creek in May of the same year.
