Nevada gold research gets USGS grant

Thursday, 24th January 2008 (1107 views)

A team of researchers investigating gold formations in Nevada has been named a recipient of a grant from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the body has announced.

The research by Jean Cline and Haroldo Lledo of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is to examine a possible relationship between the formation of overlying gold deposits and overlying magma in the state's Searchlight mining district.

As one of three recipients of an award from the USGS, the team has been recognised for pursuing research conducive to the sustainable supply of materials to safeguard America's future.

Recipients are required to understand the links between minerals, public health and the environment; to provide information on how to make informed decisions about land use and to deliver information about minerals deemed to be critical to national security.

"This research is expected to advance our understanding of how these types of mineral systems relate to intrusive and volcanic processes and improve our ability to assess undiscovered resources associated with them," said the USGS of the team's study.

The USGS collects, monitors, analyses and publicises scientific information about issues, conditions and problems relating to natural resource conditions in the US.
