Gold company contributes to $20m investment in sustainability research centreThursday, 24th January 2008 (1093 views) A gold company is among the minerals industry contributors to a new sustainability research centre being built by the University of British Columbia (UBC).The $75 million (£37.9 million) Earth Systems Science (ESS) Building is set to begin construction in 2009, according to Mineweb. Among the donors to the facility - which is to incorporate UBC's earth and ocean sciences department, said to be acknowledged as a leader in sustainability research - is Goldcorp. "The ESS Building represents an investment in the future of the Canadian and international mineral exploration communities," said Simon Peacock, dean of the Faculty of Science. Mr Peacock added that the development is the latest step in the long-running relationship between UBC and the minerals industry in British Columbia. Goldcorp states that it plays an active role in the life of its host communities, investing in community engagement initiatives such as economic contributions, educational support and special events.
