Mining firm "poster boy" for green gold mining

Monday, 31st December 2007 (1162 views)

A gold mining company in the Philippines has been described as the "poster boy" for responsibility in the industry.

Sunstar reports that Sagittarius Mines has been praised by the country's environment secretary, Lito Atienza, for its performance in the field of sustainable operations.

The company, which plans to employ open pit mining in the excavation of gold resources in three Philippines provinces, was said to be pioneering a new emphasis on environmental awareness in the sector.

According to Mr Atienza, the company "is proving that mining operations and caring for the environment can go hand in hand," reports the news provider.

He added that sustainability in the mining of gold and other natural resources is a key preoccupation of the country's president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, as well as its Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

President Arroyo gained 16 million votes - the biggest number in the history of the Philippines - in the 1995 elections, the government states.
