Gold jewellery is a "gorgeous way to stand out at a party", according to boutique owner Sophia Underwood.

The style and fashion expert, who owns the Nashville-based Via Runway, told a Tenessee newspaper that gold can add sparkle to even the most casual of outfits.

And with many women looking to add some festive sparkle to their New Year's Eve party wear, gold items may be a classic way to shine.

According to City Paper columnist Libby Callaway, other popular style trends for the winter party season include sweater dresses, boots and thick tights.

As well, colourful accent pieces such as a bright scarf or handbag are a good way to inject additional life into a classic little black dress at a holiday party, she said.

According to the Associated Free Press, the UK is preparing itself for New Year's Eve celebrations, which will include ten minutes of fireworks set up to focus on the London Eye's observation wheel.
