Acting commissioner of the Association William Woolford said that the sector is set to develop into one mindful of the sensitivities required by both the environment and host communities. Furthermore, this development is to be self directed, with gold companies themselves having the responsibility for driving this renewed commitment to social responsibility. The GGDMA has an important role to play in the transition, with the association required to ensure that gold miners are exercising due responsibility in their working practices. Gold companies operating in Guyana include Guyana Goldfields, which states that it has produced more than 96,810 ounces of gold at its two properties.
