'More women' self-purchasing gold

Thursday, 20th December 2007 (1184 views)

Gold jewellery is becoming an increasingly popular choice among women across the US, as they become more affluent.

More females are choosing to buy gold jewellery because they now have an increased spending power, Hometown Annapolis reports.

Over the past 20 years, the increased number of women in the workplace means that they are now more affluent and willing to spend their money on items such as jewellery, instead of waiting to be bought presents by their husbands.

Bruce Chance of WR Chance Jewellers in Annapolis, Maryland, commented: "They buy across the board, it goes from pearl strands and earrings to buying diamond studs, a lot of right-hand rings."

Mr Chance believes that around a third of his sales came from self-purchasing women last year.

Figures from the US bureau of labour statistics reveal that, by next year, women will make up 48 per cent of the country's labour force, demonstrating the increasing spending power that women in the US now have.
