3D gold wins international competition

Wednesday, 19th December 2007 (2922 views)

A jeweller in Hereford has been awarded the top prize in an international competition for its use of computer-aided 3D design software.

John Mckellar, based in Church Street, has been selected as International 3D Design Expert by Vision Numeric from more than 60 entries from users for its design software for a gold neckpiece, created along the competition theme of Dream and Reality.

Mr Mckellar used the software to design a virtual 3D image of a 18-carat yellow gold torc neckpiece set with black pearls, rubies and diamonds, according to the Hereford Times.

"In designing for the competition, I was inspired by many aspects of dreams - the aspirational, inspirational, surreal, humorous, nostalgic, erotic and bizarre - and influenced by the exotic surreal jewellery of the high art nouveau period," he explained.

The design, Lily of the Valley, which showcases the potential afforded to jewellers by advanced CAD technology and traditional goldsmithing techniques, would be worth around £12,000 if it were made.

Meanwhile, Herefordshire jeweller Ben Woodcock has also applied CAD techniques to his craft to create a new collection of contemporary jewellery for Shakespeare's Globe inspired by the ornate Bankside Gates.
