A lively production is taking place in Coloma that harks back to the town's Gold Rush era, with characters and plots that raise themes of self-respect and tolerance.

The Eldorado Hills Telegraph reports that Greetings from Christmas Town 2: Watch Out For That ...Christmas Tree is an original melodrama running at the Olde Coloma Theatre that is suitable for all the family.

Written by, directed by and starring Jonathan Archie, the play aims to teach audiences gold rush history, as well as self-respect and tolerance, and there are plans for more melodramas linked to the ongoing popular Gold Discovery History Program during 2008.

Located in the heart of California gold country, the Coloma Valley is in the Sierra foothills and became famous in 1848 with the discovery of gold in the stream bed of the American River at Sutter's Mill.

The 1849 California Gold Rush was triggered by news of the discovery by James W Marshall when it reached San Francisco. The pretty rural community now keeps its gold heritage alive with a number of projects, including the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park and local museums.
