Newmont Ghana initiatives hailed a successTuesday, 18th December 2007 (1219 views) Young people in Ghana have paid tribute to the benefits offered by a number of initiatives being pioneered by the gold industry's presence in the country, it has been reported.The Ghanaian Chronicle attended an open day being held by Newmont Ghana Gold to draw attention to three community initiatives it has pioneered - the Livelihood Enhancement and Community Empowerment Programme, the Agricultural Improvement and Land Access Programme and the Ahafo Agribusiness Growth Initiative. Beneficiaries of the programmes told the publication of their appreciation for the benefits offered by the mining sector, despite initial reservations. One such beneficiary, Anthony Kusi, said that the community scheme he joined had enabled him to be trained in plantain cultivation, while Ayuba Argo expressed amazement that his training in ginger cultivation had yielded such positive results. Newmont's presence in Ghana encompasses both the Ahafo and the Akyem projects, which the company obtained through its acquisition of Normandy Mining in 2002.
