Gold jewellery counts as a must-have souvenir for any tourist heading through former gold rush-era hotspot Dawson City, it has been suggested.

Writing for the Telegraph recently, author Lesley Pearce insists that the town in Canada's Yukon Territory is a great place to visit and buy an item of gold jewellery.

Dawson City is a small town that is home to only a few thousands permanent residents, but the location is still a major draw for tourists and was a major source of interest at the end of the 19th century during the Klondite gold rush.

Gold is still mined in areas close to Dawson City so a piece of jewellery fashioned from the precious metal would likely make a perfect gift and a must-have souvenir, Ms Pearce suggests.

The Klondike gold rush began in August 1896 and takes its name from the river that runs close to Dawson City in the north-west region of Canada.
