A new research centre in Whyalla, south Australia is set to concentrate on developing solar energy to help the mining industry improve its environmental performance, it has been reported.

The Advertiser reports that the new Regional Sustainability Centre is to focus on a number of green projects, including those relating to mining.

Backed by the University of South Australia, it recently emerged that $700,000 (£300,354) of state funding would be allocated to the new institution.

The funding was given as part of the government's science and research funds programme - this was one of seven science research endeavours to receive financial aid.

Work on reducing greenhouse gases and environmentally-friendly water-sourcing methods will "feed in very nicely with the mining industry and provide a practical research and development component to industry in this region", said Eddie Hughes, mayor and deputy chairman of the Whyalla Economic Development Board.

Located some 396 km northwest of the Adelaide, south Australia's capital, Whyalla is the largest city in the Upper Spence Gulf region.
