AFN and Mac sign historic agreementThursday, 22nd November 2007 (1162 views) The Mining Association of Canada (Mac) and the country's Assembly of First Nations (AFN) have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on matters relating to land claims and human resources.In an historic act that took place on Tuesday November 20th, the Mac and the AFN agreed to work together on federal consultation policy, land claims policy, human resource development and land use planning. Described as a "great step forward" by the national chief of the AFN Phil Fontaine, the statement was also said to be a boost for "certainty" that will benefit both groups by the First Nations spokesperson. Meanwhile, the Mac's chair Peter R Jones - president and chief executive officer of HudBay Minerals - highlighted the progress already made in the field of collaboration between the two groups. "Across Canada, mining companies and First Nations communities have agreements in place that include commitments on hiring, training, business development and environment practices," he said. The Mac launched its Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004.
