Wednesday, 31st October 2007 (1810 views) King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia announced his arrival in the UK this week with the help of gold.The precious metal adorned a carriage in which the king was transported up the Mall following his arrival in central London. His arrival in Britain was the first state visit to the island by a Saudi royal in 20 years, the commencement of which saw King Abdullah welcomed by the queen, the prime minister and Prince Philip. During his visit, the king visited an exhibition containing gifts and messages of political resonance exchanged between Saudi and British politicians and leaders. In a further display of a widely remarked upon sense of ceremony, the king attended a banquet at Buckingham Palace at which the table was decorated with gold candelabra - present were the prime minister as well as the queen and the duchess of Cornwall. A gold producing country, gold mining in the country is thought to have taken place for some 5,000 years.
