The proposed Pebble project in Alaska should benefit the local community, Anglo American chief executive officer Cynthia Carroll claimed in a recent interview.

Speaking to sector news provider Mineweb, Ms Carroll - ranked 7th on the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women list this year - said that the local development entailed by the project's initiation would be crucial to economic and social sustainability in Alaska.

"It's about building an infrastructure to support the region and to support the communities - whether it relates to water supply, energy supply, infrastructure development - it will be for everybody, not just the mine," she told the news source.

The chief executive officer added that Anglo American intended to work rapidly on socioeconomic studies and environmental assessments relating to the project, which she said was expected to be "world class" in its extension beyond sector standards.

According to the report, Pebble West is believed to have 31.3 million ounces of gold, with Pebble East having 39.6 million ounces of gold as well as other precious metal resources.

Ms Carroll recently said in her keynote address to the Business for Social Responsibility Conference in San Francisco that the mining industry should work to achieve greater gender equality.
