The chief executive officer (CEO) of gold producer Anglo American has stated her commitment to furthering the cause of gender equality in the industry, it has been reported.

Speaking at San Francisco's Business for Social Responsibility Conference, Cynthia Carroll asserted that Anglo American would lead the drive towards "diversity" in the mining sector, reports Mineweb.

In her keynote address, Ms Carroll also explained that the mining industry has developed into a tool for development and sustainability in the remote communities that form the base for extraction projects.

She added that the skilled nature of the work means that "new models for benefit sharing" between corporations and local communities have been necessarily established.

Training and infrastructure development were two of the methods cited by the CEO through which the industry could assert its commitment to sustainability.

Anglo American was initially founded by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer in 1917 to pursue gold mining interests in the East Rand.
