Wednesday, 24th October 2007 (1802 views) The Guianas branch of WWF has awarded $86.14 million (£42.2 million) to a fund designed to further responsible gold mining among other environmental endeavours, it has been reported.According to Stabroek News, WWF Guianas signed the grant agreements at the launch of the second phase of a regional environmental initiative entitled Guianas Sustainable Natural Resources Management. The grants were divided between the Guyana Forestry Commission, the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission - it is the latter body that is to oversee the support of sustainable gold extraction. Ongoing efforts to maximise the environmental stewardship of gold mining operations are reportedly to be boosted by the money, with the development, adoption and enforcement of effective regulations for the sector to be fostered through the project. WWF Guianas operates in the region of Guianas, comprised of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It exists to further the WWF's aim to maximise the use of sustainable resources.
