A recent talk in Oregon's Baker City looked back on the region's gold mining history, it has been reported.

Based at the Oregon Trail Museum, the discussion - entitled The Road to Gold: A Different View of the Oregon Trail - explored the heritage of the precious metal in the region, reports the Associated Press.

Led by Mark Ferns, a geologist with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, the talk examined the initial discovery of gold by Henry Griffin in the city's south in 1861.

Mr Ferns was also reported to have compared to sale of gold stocks during the height of the rush to the dotcom boom.

"You didn't have to produce anything, just the idea that you could produce something" was enough, he said, according to the new provider.

Furthermore, the geologist commented that he would not be surprised to see a resurgence of mining in the area in the future, aided by technical advances.

According to the locality's website, Baker City is still "rich with the flavour of the 1890s".
