Members of the gold mining sector were among the industry representatives present at last week's Northern Ontario Leadership Summit, it was reported.

According to the Ontario Mining Association, Chris Cormier, manager of Goldcorp's Porcupine Project, presented to attendees on natural resources at the Timmins-based event.

Michael Atkins, president of Laurentian Media, told delegates that gold producers and other members of the mining sector in Northern Ontario need to form "a creative, resourceful and competent society", according to the association.

The Porcupine Project consists of three operating gold mines and a milling facility and is based in Timmins - the properties have collectively produced more than 16 million ounces of gold since production began in 1910, according to Goldcorp.

Organised by the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities, the summit welcomed more than 200 people to Timmins, the goal of the event described as safeguarding "the future and prosperity" of Northern Ontario by the federation's vice president and summit chair Mac Bain.
