Monday, 22nd October 2007 (1848 views) The Gold Rush Days festival in Dahlonega raised about $20,000 for charity, it was reported.Chairwoman of the festival Sabrina Gooch told the Gainesville Times that the event drew more people than ever this year and raised funds for the White Christmas programme for disadvantaged children. She said: "We had more than 250,000 people. It's been more this year than in the past." Ms Gooch added that the Bayou Billy Home brew - made especially by Bayou Billy - was one of the key draws of the event, which marks the discovery of gold in Dahlonega in 1828. The White Christmas charity gives families clothing, toys and a Christmas dinner, reports the publication. Other features of the festival included stalls selling sweet potato biscuits and fried cheese, as well as a 98-vehicle parade featuring 35 horses and eight horse-covered wagons. Earlier this year, the 45th World Open Gold Panning Championship and the 20th Annual GA State Open Gold Panning Championship was held at the Consolidated Gold Mine in Dahlonega.
