Friday, 19th October 2007 (1856 views) The ship detained by Spanish authorities belonging to gold and treasure exploration company Odyssey Marine Exploration has been cleared to leave Algeciras, it has emerged. In the latest development in a tussle over 500,000 tonnes of gold and silver coins that were found by Odyssey earlier this year in a shipwreck Spain believes belongs to the nation, the Odyssey Explorer was escorted to Algeciras on Tuesday. After a thorough inspection, Explorer has now been cleared to leave the port, from which it is to proceed to another port where it will be mobilised before shipwreck search and archaeological recovery operations are resumed. Greg Stemm, co-chairman and co-founder of the US company, expressed the firm's 'pleasure' at the 'efficient' nature of the Spanish search. "We have always shown the utmost respect for Spain's cultural heritage and are prepared to provide Spanish authorities with the archaeological data gathered about shipwreck sites discovered during authorised and legal operations in the deep waters of the Alboran Sea in the western Mediterranean," he added.
