A chemical engineer from Rice University has been commended by a sector magazine for his research into gold nanoparticles.

Michael Wong features in a list entitled America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences: 37 Under 36 in a special October issue of the publication.

Mr Wong's work on the creation of palladium-coated gold nanoparticles that can be used to break down chlorinated compounds in polluted water was integral to his receipt of the honour.

Speaking to the magazine about the gold nanoparticle research, the scientists said: "We didn't believe it at first, because the gold-palladium nanoparticles were just so much more efficient - like, a hundred times more efficient."

Other 'young innovators' featured on the list include environmental activist Philippe Cousteau and musician Regina Spektor.

Kerry Bianchi, Smithsonian group publisher, said that she hoped the list would draw people away from nostalgic celebration of the past and into a celebration of the present.

In related news, scientists at the University of East Anglia are developing a way of detecting drug use from fingerprints with the help of gold nanoparticles, reported Scienceline.
