The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) has made public a new initiative designed to help gold miners and the rest of the industry meet new spills regulations.

In a document that the OMA states has been "highly praised by the ministry of the environment" in Canada, the organisation sets out guidelines, protocols and directions for complying with new standards.

Produced with SENES Consultants Limited, the paper - entitled Spill Prevention, Contingency Planning and Reporting for the Mining Sector - follows the recent Environmental Protection Act move that makes the creation of such contingency plans compulsory.

OMA president Chris Hodgson said on the association's website: "The aim of the document is to assist with developing site specific plans for preventing, mitigating and reporting spills."

According to the association, a number of environmental specialists from its member companies helped to compile the document.

In related news, OMA member Richmont Mines recently celebrated the opening of its Island Gold project in Ontario's Algoma district.
