Goldsmiths' Fair celebrates 25th anniversary

Wednesday, 26th September 2007 (2823 views)

The annual Goldsmiths' Fair, the only European event to focus exclusively on art works made from precious metals, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The fair places special emphasis on texture and visual impact – gold and precious metals are knotted, woven and shaped into naturalistic, fluid, abstract and rigid works of art.

According to the Telegraph, clothing displays at the exhibit feature the incorporation of gold thread into fabric, creating a metallic effect.

Catherine Martin, among the designers displaying at the event, uses a version of a traditional Japanese textile technique to spin hand-drawn gold wire into silk fabric, the newspaper reported.

Designer Kamilla Ruberg has incorporated bold, geometric structures into her gold design, while goldsmith David Goodwin is displaying rings with mesh structures that the Telegraph declares are "impossibly light and airy".

The two-week event takes place at Goldsmiths' Hall in London from September 24th through October 7th.
