Lina Villa, the corporation's general coordinator, told the publication that consumer demand for green gold has reached a level at which it outweighs availability. "The first years were about creating the demand for environmentally-certified gold," she said. "Now demand is exceeding supply." Founded in Columbia in 2000, the corporation reportedly operates using artisinal mining techniques and seeks to generate higher earnings for small-scale miners, according to the news provider. The scheme trains workers in responsible mining techniques and is said to pay two per cent above market price for the gold produced by its workers. Some 200 Afro-Columbian mining families have become part of the scheme over the past seven years. In related news, Gold producer AngloGold Ashanti was recently given a Golden Gecko award for its environmentally-friendly work at the Sunrise Dam mine in Australia, according to WA Business News.
