Tahltan chairman 'supports gold mining sustainability'

Tuesday, 18th September 2007 (1107 views)

A First Nations community leader has expressed his support for the sustainable development of the Galore Creek gold and copper mine, it has been reported.

Curtis Rattray, chairman of the Tahltan Central Council, told the Canadian Press that the community would be working to support sustainability in the gold mining sector.

''Sustainability isn't about a five-year window, sustainability is about a 100 or 1,000-year window and you need to think and plan in that kind of context," Mr Rattray said to the news provider.

Located in British Columbia, the Galore Creek Mine is being built by NovaGold and Teck Cominco, who signed a deal affirming their cooperation with the Tahltan First Nation last year.

Meanwhile, chief executive officer of NovaGold Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse told the Canadian Press that the development of infrastructure around the project would not only ensure its sustainability, but support mining activity in the sector for years to come.

The 50/50 partnership between NovaGold and Teck Cominco to develop the Galore Creek project was announced in May of this year.
