A new exhibition in Iran is showcasing designer pieces of gold jewellery, it has been reported.

The Gold, Jewel and Precious Gemstone exhibition opened in Tehran's Niavran Cultural/Historical Complex on August 28th 2007, according to IranMania.

Exhibit director Gholamreza Bakhshi told the news provider that the display could inform people about the country's mining heritage.

Open daily until August 31st, the event contains over 50 pavilions, displaying gold, jewels and stones with an estimated value of 50 billion riyals (£6.6 billion).

Earlier this year, Mineweb reported that the Tehran Gold and Jewelry Association estimates that Iran's previous metal, jewelry and ornament exportation reached $123 million during the Iranian year to March 2007.

Association chairman Kourosh Goharbin stated that 80 per cent of these exports reached Arab nations, including Oman, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Gold mines operating in the country include the state-owned Mouteh mine, located in Neyshabour.
